Winter’s Farewell
And the spring returns
Mother Sun stretches her golden fingers
through February’s brittle air,
calling down to the sleeping earth:
“Wake up, wake up, my drowsy children!
Winter’s reign is fading.”
In their underground chambers,
daffodils stir, stretching pale stems
toward her warming voice,
while tulips — pink, red, yellow promises –
whisper anxiously among themselves:
“Is it time? Is it safe
To shed our earthen blankets?”
Brave iris, already pushing
through frost-laced soil,
stands in blue-purple glory:
“Come, sisters, the earth is warming,
I can feel spring’s pulse beneath my feet.”
Violets emerge in shy clusters,
their faces turned toward the strengthening light,
as winter releases its grip
one icicle tear at a time.
Between awakening roots,
ant colonies begin their march,
weaving past hyacinth stalks
that perfume…
